The benefits of flaxseed in its whole seed form far surpass those of flax oil for a couple of major reasons. Just taking the flax oil doesn't provide you with the same amount of fiber, lignans and protein found in the rest of the seed. Choose whole or milled (ground) flax if you want all the health benefits and nutrition that flaxseed has to offer. Freshly ground seed includes a much higher fiber content, which is so vital to maintaining good digestive health. Because you grind the seed as needed, you avoid the oxidation of beneficial oils and are assured of freshness. Unlike oil, flaxseed has an unlimited shelf life when properly stored and protected from UV rays.
Directions:
We recommend an average serving of 2-3 tablespoons of whole seeds daily, milled as described below. Because flaxseed fiber expands in your stomach, be sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day to aid digestion.
Milling Your Flaxseed
In order to extract the most benefit from your Brush Creek Golden Flaxseeds, you should mill (grind) them fresh, just before using. Do not eat them whole, as the seeds will not break down properly and will simply pass through your system as whole seeds. Flaxseed grinders are available in specialty food shops and catalogs, but we find that a coffee grinder will also easily process the seeds.
Storing Your Flaxseed
Unlike flax oils and premilled seed, our whole flaxseed has an unlimited shelf life. Once the package is opened, store it in a cool, dry place, protected from sunlight and the seeds will keep indefinitely. Once milled, flaxseed will keep 4-7 days in the refrigerator and at least 2 months in the freezer.
